In May 2006, four British animal rights activists were sentenced to a total of 40 years behind bars after pleading guilty to "blackmail" for their roles in a campaign against the infamous Newchurch guinea pig farm which bred animals for torture & death at the hands of vivisectors (the farm has since closed, following years of activist pressure).

Jon Ablewhite, John Smith and Kerry Whitburn were all sentenced to twelve years imprisonment. Josephine Mayo was sentenced to four years imprisonment.
